provide a community with a common definition for concepts like obligation and function. This paper considers the connection between social institutions and organized crime. Discussion While it seems like
social institutions should be things like schools, churches and police, they are not physical places or organizations, but "structures of relationship, obligation, role and function" (Jenkins, 2001). They are "social
concepts and practices, but also involve cognitive structures," so that a society as a whole generally agrees on such concepts as right and wrong (Jenkins, 2001). Those who dont agree
with the societal norms thus constructed are seen as "criminals, or at least antisocial" (Jenkins, 2001). According to Jenkins, there are six factors that should be considered to be social
institutions: political, economic, religious, linguistic, educational and artistic (2001). The political social institution is the one the provides an "organizational principle, with authority figures, with defined roles and obligations," and
oral or written laws (Jenkins, 2001). The economic institution speaks to the "production of goods and the organization of labor," while the religious sets up beliefs about "the world, universal
order and good, spiritual beings and powers, as well as rituals and ceremonies" (Jenkins, 2001). The linguistic structure impacts society because it marks out certain groups as sharing a language;
