of the characters. The two stories, although very different, present characters that are truly influenced and driven, in one way or another, to behave in a particular way in their
respective stories. In Jacksons story one of those characters is Tessie. In Smiths story the character is the mother. The following paper examines who both of these individuals are ultimately
trapped and thus their behavior is trapped, due to their respective environments. Social Environment: Jackson and Smith In Jacksons story the social environment is clearly one of tradition.
The tradition is not something the reader is aware of until later in the story, actually the very end of the story, and as such one perhaps just sees the
character of Tessie as being a very traditional homemaker in a small and seemingly perfect community. This seems evident when she arrives outside where everyone else has gathered, in what
seems to be a celebration for the town, and someone remarks that they thought she wasnt going to make it. She replies, "Wouldnt have me leave mdishes in the sink,
now, would you" (Jackson). Interestingly enough, without the dooming nature of Jacksons story the women, such as Tessie, are very reflective of the mother in Smiths story. She is a
woman who has given her life to being a wife and a mother and she is simply trying to understand why her son expects to live his life without responsibility.
She is a woman who has always taken care of her children and believed that she is only as happy as her children. She is the homemaker and she has
long been happy with that role, and also proud of that role. But, it was also not as though she had a choice in that role either. Throughout
