encourage schools to teach social and emotional skills along with academics and to teach those skills deliberately. This is not a new idea, it was promoted by many of the
cooperative learning theorists and authors two decades ago. Foster and colleagues (2008) reported that when social and emotional can increase academic learning by 11 percent or more according to
the research. Researchers consistently state that social and emotional learning is foundational to student success (Foster et al., 2008). Elias (2003) wrote that social and emotional learning is "sometimes called
the missing piece because it represents a set of skills important to success in schools, families, . . . and life in general" (p. 7). The Collaborative for Academic,
Social, and Emotional Learning has identified essential skills for academic and social-emotional learning: Know yourself and others: * Identify feelings, recognize and label ones feelings (Elias, 2003, p. 9). *
Be responsible-understand ones obligations to engage in behaviors that are legal, safe and ethical (Elias, 2003, p. 9). * Recognize and identify your own strengths (Elias, 2003, p. 9). Make
