Our society functions in dependence on various physical and philosophical infrastructural features. Social disorganization occurs when the infrastructural features that characterize
our society degrade to a point where the social institutions and the individuals that comprise them are adversely affected. The degradation of traditional values and heightened crime are among
the results. The social disorganization theory has been postulated in an attempt to describe the relationship that emerges. Under the social disorganization
theory there are key criteria that are linked with an individuals propensity to engage in criminal activity. These are feelings of inequality, poverty, the presence of racism, and an
overall feeling of despair (Siegel and Welsh, 2008). These criteria are important at all levels of crime. Even organized crime can be contended to result, in part at
least, from the same factors. Organized crime might be contended to actually take advantage of social disorganization. Consider, for example, the role
organized crime played during prohibition. This was a time when an assortment of factors converged to result in alcohol being made illegal. Many, however, were determined to obtain
alcohol regardless of the legalities. Organized crime took advantage of their desires to insure that alcohol not only continued to be manufactured by distributed. It did so through
