that not everyone in the colonies were in support of it. If that had been the case, after all, there would have been no war. Many supporters feared
that the Revolution would threaten existing social hierarchies and unleash social disorder. Their fears were certainly not without basis. That did, in fact, occur during this time period
and it affected all segments of the American populace. When the Revolutionary War erupted there were two decisively divided camps of thought, those that supported the move towards
colonial independence from the British and those that did not. In addition to the loyalists and the patriots, of course, there were those that tried to remain neutral on
the issues of independence. Each was affected in some way by the Revolutionary War. While we often regard the war solely from the perspective of the political changes
it brought, it also brought considerable social disorder and represented a significant threat to existing social hierarchies. The story of the Revolutionary War has been told in a number of
formats. One of the more recent is "Mary Sillimans War", directed by Stephen Surjik. Based on the book "The Way of Duty: A Woman and Her Family
in Revolutionary America" by Joy Day Buel and Richard Buel Jr., this film is an excellent depiction of how everything that was familiar in colonial life was torn apart by
the Revolutionary War. In it a minister and his wife struggle with the many changes that have overcome them in Fairfield, Connecticut. Although the war itself has not
engulfed Fairfield, a significant battle has erupted within the community as people take sides in the conflict. Indeed, even the Sillimans had been torn apart ideologically by the affair.
