Well look at the writings of Durkheim and Marx, as well as an article by Robert Putnam, to support this contention. Discussion Lets begin our examination with Emile Durkheim. Durkheim, like Putnam, believes in the vitality of society, and sees it as a whole construct. Society, in other words, is an entity distinct from the individuals who comprise it; they may come and go, but the society as a whole remains (Thompson, p. 29). When we think of it, this is an amazing statement. How can something exist without its component parts? Durkheim believes that a society is based on a "totality of beliefs and sentiments common to average members of the same society" and that those beliefs and sentiments imbue the society with a life of its own (Thompson, p. 29). Because of this, society is the same everywhere, and remains the same through succeeding generations (Thompson, p. 29). "It is, therefore, something completely different from individual consciousness, even though it is materialized only through individuals" (Thompson, p. 29). Putnams article discusses the way in which membership in community organizations has fallen off since the 1980s. Everything, from the V.F.W. to bridge clubs has experienced a decline. This decline in civic participation is mirrored in a decline in other areas, such as voter turnout. Putnam seeks to identify the reasons for declining participation, and what can be done about it. Interestingly, he uses the term "social capital" to describe the processes hes detailing. That calls to mind Durkheims words, ...
