The 1950s and 60s were clearly defined by a great deal of change in all aspects of consideration. From political turmoil to social changes the world, and especially the United States, was never to be the same. In this time period technology grew as well and this technology further encouraged change. Much of the change can be seen through the art of the time period, Pop Art, which symbolized bold divergence from tradition, any kind of tradition. It was, in many ways, a free-for-all in relationship to what was considered acceptable. The following paper examines Pop Art and the social context surrounding that art movement. Social Context: Pop Art While most people may associate Pop Art with the 1960s, the truth is that it began in the 1950s. It was in the 60s, however, that it became prominent in all aspects of society. During the 1950s many artists were having a difficult time dealing with the art of the time period. There was, at the time, the Cubists and the Pop Artists. Both forms of artistic inclinations arose from a rebellion against a particular type of art at the time. "[T]he Cubists thought Post-Impressionist artists were too tame and limited, while Pop Artists thought the Abstract Expressionists pretentious and over-intense" (Pop art, 2006). The art of the Impressionists and the Expressionists was considered too stiff, too specific in terms of the audience, an audience of perhaps "cultured" people. But, with Pop Art the art connected with the popular culture, the common people, addressing the conditions wherein "ordinary people derived most of their visual pleasure from television, magazines, or comics" (Pop art, 2006).
