in mind. Discussion Social constructionism is an outgrowth of social constructivism, according to one source; constructivism is thought of mostly in connection with Piagets theories of education, in which the
learner is not merely a passive recipient of knowledge, but a builder as well (Shaw). This theory no longer views the student as a blank slate upon which the teacher
imposes information, but a full participant in the learning process (Shaw). Constructionism adds another layer to the constructivist viewpoint: if constructivism embraces the theory that "knowledge is built by the
learner, not supplied by the teacher," constructionism adds the additional idea that this is particularly effective and pleasing "when the learner is engaged in the construction of something external or
at least shareable ... a sand castle, a machine, a computer program, a book" (Shaw). With regard to non-educational issues, perhaps a working definition for this paper would be that
social constructionism provides a way to understand the debate by experts on child sexual abuse, which framed "primarily as empirical issues," also at times reflect "moral and political, as well
as scientific, disagreements" (Mildred 2003: 492). (Its Mildreds article that is under discussion here.) Further guidance comes from Joel Best, who notes that there is an argument among sociologists as
to whether a "weak" or "strong" reading of the stance of claims-makers is more effective in evaluating their work (2006). Best gives an example of this that makes things a
bit easier to understand: statistics usually say that blacks are underrepresented in the census (2006). A weak reading of this information leads researchers to accept this finding but continue to
