The alcohol industry in Poland is faced with a number of considerations that both directly and indirectly affect it operations. These considerations are both micro considerations, i.e. those that occur within the industry itself, and macro considerations, i.e. those that are affected by the issues that it faces within Poland and within the international market. These issues include political, economic, technological, and social considerations. The latter, however, are particularly complex and will consequently be the focus of this paper. As Moskalewiczi (2004) notes, tensions between public interests and the alcohol industry abound. These tensions present a number of social considerations that must be addressed if the industry is to flourish. It must be acknowledged by the alcohol industry that public health is directly affected by its product. Alcoholism, after all, is a very real social concern. So too are the more indirect impacts such as driving under the influence. Consequently, it is not surprising that by the beginning of the 1980s: "WHO (Euro) recommended significant reduction in mean alcohol consumption among the major targets of its Strategy Health for All in 2000" (Moskalewiczi, 2004, 1377). Poland was one of the many countries in Europe that developed several specific policies regarding alcohol consumption. These policies included such policies as the maximum consumption per day and week as well as specific criteria defining what constitutes an alcoholic drink (the amount of ethanol in a standard drink), the minimum ages for purchasing and using alcohol, and the ...
