and enhanced and expanded those ideas over the subsequent years (Davis, 2006). Jean Piagets Stages of Cognitive Development did not focus enough on the social factor in learning, according to
Bandura and Lev Vygotsky. There were some commonalities between and among these three pioneers. For instance, they all said that children learn by observing (Kearsley. 2009). Observation includes observing attitudes,
emotions, and behaviors of others in different situations (Kearsley. 2009). Social-cognitive theory proposes that behavior is an interaction of different factors, which include the person himself, the environment ad the
behavior itself (Davis, 2006). That may sound confusing since two of the factors are the person and the behavior. The factor of person encompasses the individuals thoughts and how
those thoughts influence the persons behavior (Davis, 2006). The interaction between any individual and the specific environment involves that persons beliefs as well as their personal cognitive competencies (Davis, 2006).
These competencies are initially influenced by the influences and structures of that environment (Davis, 2006). The person analyzes the environment and determines what behavior he or she will do (Davis,
2006). This is why any individuals behavior may change according to the environment and according to that very specific situation they are facing. Social-Cognitive Development theory is like a
bridge from behavior theorists to social theorists (Davis, 2006). It encompasses some of the foundations of each field. Bandura was not the first to bring the social aspect to development
into the stream of consciousness. In 1890, William James discussed the importance of the social self, which is the foundation for some of social-cognitive theoretical postures on how the self
interacts with the environment (Davis, 2006). Kurt Lewin added to the discussion with his field theory (Davis, 2006). Others who laid the foundation include Adler, Tolman, and most importantly, Millar
