fit within the social scheme of things. In Cervantes work it seems that in many ways the author is trying to illustrate the ridiculous nature of defined social class and
how it ultimately rules and oppresses people. The following paper examines this novel and what it has to say about social class. Social Class in "Don Quixote" One
of the most obvious elements of this novel is that which involves the character of Don Quixote and how he is essentially lost in a world of illusion. He sees
himself as a grand noble man, a chivalrous individual, whose duty is to protect others and be more than he really is in the real world. Through this, and especially
in his relationship with Sancho, we see a sort of tension, but a tension that is not necessarily oppressive because Sancho so loves Don and he understands that Don is
not perhaps well in his mind. For example, at one point Sancho is talking with Don and Don, questioning his intelligence and class position, asks if he has read it
in any books. Books are something for more respected social classes and Sancho, a common man, would not have read a book. Don asks "Where have you ever seen or
read..." (Cervantes 71). And Sancho states, "The truth is...that I never read any history because I dont know how to read or write" (Cervantes 71). There is a clear distinction
in their class. It is such realities as this that truly make a distinction between the role that Don is playing and where Sancho sits in the social scale.
