Essay / Research Paper Abstract
This is a 5 page paper using the theories of Bourdieu, Lacan, Baudrillard and Barthes to discuss the theories of social distinction. Traditionally, sociologists have found distinct separation of the classes based not only on monetary and educational standards but also are largely classified by cultural capital, language and psychological distinctions from others. While parents may attempt to overcome these distinctions through mobilization through the classes in the interests of their children, there are still many factors which they cannot overcome. However, postmodernists do not agree that the same social distinctions are made in today’s society as individuals are overcoming social distinctions and forming new relationships based on common interests and reality because of capitalism, consumerism and the modern media.

"Distinction: A Social Critique of the Judgement of Taste" (1984) is considered to be a great influence on the contemporary theories related to class and the social system today. Within
and between each social class there are clear distinctions which disallow a great deal of overlapping of classes. One of the reasons for this, most prominently in the upper classes
is because of "cultural capital" which can be defined as "the accumulated stock of knowledge about the products of artistic and intellectual traditions, which is learned through educational training and,
crucially for Bourdieu, also through social upbringing" (Trigg, 2001, p. 99). Inequality and cultural capital are powerful and passed between generations outside
of the educational realm and explains the superiority of the performance between many children of privileged backgrounds. One good example as seen in todays society is the distinction between "old
money" in families with generations of established wealth and "new money" in people who have recently acquired wealth but come from generations of middle or lower incomes. The families with
older money look down upon and generally separate themselves from new money and was aptly portrayed in Fitzgeralds "The Great Gatsby" (1925) when the recently established Gatsby is unable to
