the surface, it helps to have a clear definition. According to the Cultural Anthropology Glossary, social change is defined as: "Any change in social relations that causes a change
in a society or transformation of its social structure" ("Glossary - Cultural Anthropology," 2006). A social change may be seen in family life for example as more single women head
family households. Social change is found in different areas of life. Social change is often aligned with the political, but again, it can be viewed as being associated with changes
within institutions such as the family. For example, families have changed over the years. Today, there are gay families, one parent families, blended families and so forth. This is quite
a different condition than what was witnessed decades ago. Today, for instance, women have reduced the number of hours they spend on domestic work (Gershuny, Bittman & Brice, 2005). Findings
of studies in this realm do have implications for social change (Gershuny, Bittman & Brice, 2005). It does seem to be the case that an example of social change
is in fact changes within social networks. Social change has also been seen in the workplace and in large political and economic structures. The rise of the union at
the turn of the twentieth century is one example as is its downward trend in more recent years. Unionization is in fact a good example of social change. Unions have
changed things as it relates to how work is done. Years ago, employees toiled sixteen or seventeen hours per day, and barely received a paycheck. They also worked under very
dangerous conditions. Unionization, which resulted in the passage of strict legislation, has created a society where work is safe and pleasant and where workers can share in some of the
