The social forces that are driving the changes in family structure relate to economics, demographics and the changing role of women. Mintz and Kellogg (1988), in their history of American family life entitled Domestic Relations: A Social History of American Family Life, recognized that the function and form of the American family has changed substantially in recent years. The institution of the American family was first created and maintained by very different social forces than are at work in the modern era. "The institution was the family, and it performed many more functions than does its present day counterpart" (Mintz and Kellogg, 1988, p. 1). In the past, the Puritan American family was built around functionality and a work ethic that is rarely in place in the modern society. Though many perceive the American family as a social institution that is essentially resistant to the forces of social change, Mintz and Kellogg (1988) argue instead that it is deeply routed in social process. Factors that include social, political and economic elements are distinctly related to the structure of the American family and the way it is perceived as a part of the larger culture. In the Puritan early American culture, the family was marked by a blurred line between family connections and community (Mintz and Kellogg, 1988).
