995). II. PREJUDICE, STEREOTYPING AND DISCRIMINATION DEFINED Closely connected in connotation, the definitions of prejudice, stereotyping and discrimination all revolve around harboring intolerance for another individual based upon perceived,
inaccurate and/or small-minded attitudes. To be prejudice is to hold contempt for another who is different in some way, not the least of which includes race, gender or sexual orientation.
Those who speak abrasively of others who, for example, have darker colored skin do so without taking into consideration the persons who live within that skin, choosing instead to judge
them not based upon character but rather a difference in pigment. Stereotyping is recognized by the need to categorize all people of one particular group, ethnicity or other social connection
by virtue of the behavior or situation of only some in that population. Black males, for example, are typically cast a stereotypical glance by those who erroneously believe all black
males have little redeeming social value and are predisposed to criminal activity. Other stereotypes include lesbians are unfit to be mothers, all gay men have AIDS, blondes are dumb, all
