on. However, when such anxiety reaches debilitating levels, it is clearly something that goes beyond what is thought of as the "norm." Social Anxiety Disorder or "SAD" is the term
used to describe the condition in which a person becomes functionally impaired in his or her work, social, and family life because if his or her intense fear of social
situations. For a child or adolescent with SAD, the ramifications of such a condition are enormous since it will define who he or she is becoming as a person. A
child who develops social anxiety disorder is clearly much more than simply "shy." The student researching the disorder must understand that the disorder can (and does) cause problems for children
that, unless properly treated, will almost certainly worsen as the child grows older. What is SAD? Far too often, social anxiety disorder is either ignored or not considered
in children and adolescents since it is far simpler to simply make the assumption that a child is extremely shy. But there is a distinct difference between relatively simple shyness
and the disorder. According to a report from the Ascribe Higher Education News Service (08-12-02) hundreds of thousands of American school children suffer from SAD. The report quotes a psychology
professor at Smith College, Patricia DiBartolo, as saying that in her clinical work she has known children who: " ... would hide in the restroom instead of entering the
school cafeteria for lunch hour. ... In the classroom, these kids would desperately avoid speaking out or reading aloud in class. ... Some would lug all their books with them
