time, especially time periods that possess at least centuries, there are many discoveries and changes that occur in any given culture. The following paper examines social achievements, or changes, that
occurred between 1200 and 1400 as they primarily related to the Black Plague which truly altered many, if not most, aspects of society. Social Achievements in History: The
Black Plague The Black Plague killed an enormous amount of people, some saying as much as half the population was killed by the plague. Prior to the plague there had
essentially been a time of great growth and many places in Europe were actually overpopulated. There were not necessarily enough jobs for people and many individuals lived in utter poverty,
even if they worked on someones land in exchange for housing. The ruling class of the European nations all but owned the people who worked and conditions were less than
favorable for most people. But, with the plague there were many changes that, although devastating beyond compare, allowed for a change in society. In one respect, and it is
a very important respect, "So many people had died that there were serious labor shortages all over Europe. This led workers to demand higher wages, but landlords refused those demands"
(TheMiddleAges.net, 2010). However, they could get no one to really work their land and the peasants revolted and ultimately gained more social and political power because they were necessary to
society. It brought an end to the ruling of the wealthy and politically connected and created a far more democratic society where the poor had more power than they had
