Kate, is director of the CIA. Lee had been the uncompromising Senator from Georgia before succeeding in his bid for the presidency. The story opens with the killing of Senator Frederick Wallace, a conservative from South Carolina. At the time, Freddie is at his lakeside cabin with his mistress of 25 years, Elizabeth Johnson, an African American. When Freddie goes to the kitchen in the morning, he is shot. The sniper is in a tree where he has waited for an hour for the opportunity he knew he would have - he inserts "a single .22 caliber, long-rifle cartridge into the chamber" (Woods, 2003, p. 3), pulls the trigger, the bullet careens through the window right into Freddies left temple with barely a sound. Elizabeth hears nothing but the senator as he falls to the fall. And, thus, a serial sniper has killed his first victim. As the president and his wife are returning from Wallaces funeral, the president gets a call - another victim. Van Vandervelt, an outspoken obnoxious conservative radio host who consistently speaks out strongly against all liberals has been killed. A pressure bomb was placed under the drivers seat of his car. We next meet Ted Brennan, a conservative who is on a regular CNN television show debating issues with liberal commentator Evan Turner. As Ted is on the escalator at Penn Station in New York, he feels a bump in his calf muscle. Brennan goes from the train to a bus to return to his home in New Jersey. Within 15 minutes of being home, Brennan gets violently ill and is rushed to the hospital. He was poisoned with a rare bacterial infection but they were able to treat him in time to save his life.
