that the single most preventable cause of premature death is the smoking of tobacco1. The costs associated with smoking are more than only the cost of the tobacco or cigarettes,
there is the cost of treatment for a range of conditions that are caused or related to smoking, including cardiovascular disease and a range of cancers and the cost of
the lost lives2. It is estimated that if the average 35 year old male smoked reduced their tobacco use by 50% they would gain an additional 1.2 years of life,
if they gave up they would gain an additional 2.3 years3. For females the gain is greater, halving the tobacco usage would increase the average life span by 1.5 years
and quitting by 2.8 years4. To put these gains into a broader context the gains that can be realised from quitting smoking is greater than the benefits gained from controlling
mild hypertension, taking serum cholesterol levels at 240-299 mg/dL and reducing them to 200 mg/dL or the reduction of a bodyweight that is 130% of ideal bodyweight5. There are also
other hidden costs that are often ignored in terms of the cost and benefit of smoking cessation programmes, these are the impact of passive smoking on non smokers6. The reduction
of smoking levels as well as having a direct impact will also have an indirect savings on the ambient passive smoking levels. A range of cessation programmes have been
