the largest contributor to many of the highest risk diseases (Manley, Epps, Husten, Glynn & Shopland, 1991). Because getting long-time smokers to quit has proven to be a near-impossible
task, the focus for intervention has moved to young adults and younger children. A number of recent studies have been conducted on the challenge of instigating smoking cessation programs
on college campuses. The usefulness of an education program is evidenced by the results found in a study conducted by Katapong & Eaton et al. (1996), which found that
only one-third of college students who smoked understood the health risks involved-students believed that smoking-related problems were related to health problems associated with old age. In another study,
it was found that the question, "Do you smoke?" is not a part of the assessment for young people, although some had already exhibited symptoms of hypertension by the time
they entered college (Coulter, 1991; Steenbarger & Conyne et al., 1995). Other studies have shown that campus problems, including smoking cessation are an important function of college health professionals
(Charney, 1994). Using Dorothea E. Orems general theory, a program model can be drawn that the nurse practitioner can use to work with college students under his or her care.
Theoretical Considerations College is a time when the individual is moving away from identity with
a peer group to forge an individual identity more aligned with personal strengths. In addition, college students are exposed to, and more open to, various facts regarding health and
