use the power of government to force other people to give up bad habits. Not only that, they want money. Those who claim to care about others inhalation of smoke,
as well as the health of the smokers themselves, really care about padding the pockets of the government. Obviously, while Libertarians support the rights of smokers as their platform concerns
individual rights, fiscal conservatives who are often found in the Republican party oppose much of the regulation on tobacco. Some say that all the Republicans are concerned with is money,
and do not care about health, but the truth is that the cigarette tax hurts the poor, and the Democratic party does nothing to help. Cigarettes have been taxed to
death. About 20 years ago, one could buy a pack of cigarettes in a drug store for about 60 cents. Today, the price is up to close to five dollars
in many places. This has encouraged a black market, and not only that, has had little in the way of a deterrent effect. If it really worked, there would
not be a problem. Dasbach notes: "Politicians are distorting the facts and making wild promises because theyre frantically eager to get their hands on half-a-trillion dollars in new cigarette
taxes" ("Politicians" PG). The new taxes gives the Democrats who like to tax, more money to spend. Part of the war on cigarettes is that it gives politicians the ability
to tax where few will argue against the imposition. By creating a disdain for tobacco, the government has created a smokescreen that everyone supports. It is no longer chic to
