groups. Individuals combine their resources in collectively advantageous activities of all descriptions; and, in turn, groups, their mores and attitudes, have a tremendous influence over individual behavior. Emile Durkheim posited
that small-group and/or face-to-face associations can be viewed as the "constraints" by which societal norms are transmitted to an individual (Collins and Raven, 1969). The Bible shows that group behavior
has been an intrinsic part of human behavior throughout history. For example, Judges 11:3 states that "Jephthah fled from his brothers and settled in the land of Tob,
where a group of adventurers gathered around him and followed him" (NIV, 2002). Second Samuel 2:25 states that the "men of Benjamin rallied behind Abner. They formed themselves into a
group and took their stand on top of a hill" (NIV, 2002). In the New Testament, Mark 6:39 tells how Jesus directed the people to sit down in groups so
that they could all be fed; and John 8:3 tells of how the Pharisees brought a woman before a group of people and accused her of adultery. Scripture, of course,
has many more references to groups, but these few examples demonstrate the fact that groups can vary widely, and that people can be drawn together for many different purposes.
The following research will examine how three different groups function, choosing those groups according to age, i.e. groups to be observed include an early childhood/ preschool group; an adolescent group;
and a senior adults group. This observational, qualitative research will attempt to ascertain pertinent characteristics of each group. Background information on group behavior. Although groups differ according to
size, formality, and a score of other characteristics, all groups from the nuclear family to large, international corporations involve various degrees of interdependence between two or more individuals (Holme, 1972).
