about a deep and rich history involving the main character, Miranda. Like many short stories it can be explicated from many perspectives. It is a story about environmental and social
concerns, a story about rebellion and perhaps even terrorism. It is also a story about loneliness and the desire to create positive change as it relates to the main character.
The following paper examines Miranda in the position of tragic hero. Small Fires by Helene Littmann When one envisions a tragic hero they are naturally considered to
be incredibly strong and determined to some extent. They have some noble ideal one could say, and they have flaws, human flaws, that make them likeable as well as making
them someone the reader can relate to. They often do things that the reader themselves would like to do but may not have the opportunity or the courage. And, generally,
they meet with some tragedy in their pursuit to do something great, perhaps often dying in the end of some battle as they fight for what is right. In
the case of Miranda there are elements that seem to be possessed of a tragic hero, but yet there are many elements that do not urge the reader to sympathize
enough to truly consider them a hero. For example, Miranda is one who is strong and determined. She wants to change the world and she realized that, "Miranda saw clearly
that it made little difference to save one tree or even one forest. You had to change the system. You had to hurt it" (Littmann 3). She had preceded this
with illustrations of how people she had known, and still knew, had somehow given up on their ideals, moved on to poor jobs and menial living. But she had progressed
