This small business with only 39 employees, prides itself on a concern for the Earth and a desire to promote the crafts of people within a local community.
Unfortunately, their positive sentiments turned sour when they recognized that they were losing a considerable amount of their profit to shoplifters and through employee errors, mismanagement and misreporting on time
sheets. The owners hoped that these problems could be addressed through the implementation of electronic monitoring devices on the shop floor as well as in the employee offices behind
the retail outlet. Following the installation of video monitoring equipment and an electronic system to track clothing tags to prevent theft, the owners also installed electronic monitoring systems for
the telephones and computers as a means of determining where loss was occurring and whether closer monitoring of employee and client activities would reduce theft and employee errors. Although
the owners recognized the conflicting image they were presenting as they focused on marketing whole goods while utilizing technologies to improve their business success, they were willing to take the
risk of dissatisfaction both on the part of the employees and clients in order to reduce the magnitude of fiscal problems related to loss. The implementation of the in-store
monitoring system to reduce shoplifting was reviewed by the owners with all of the staff members, and a protocol was developed to determine the correct course of action if shoplifting
is expected and substantiated by the monitoring system. The in-store set up included the following mechanisms: 2 video cameras to provide different vantages points through out the
store; a display terminal behind the front counter that is linked to these three cameras and allows staff to view the video images while also providing customer support to other
