Executive Summary Studies of sleep and its relationship to a variety of aspects such as moods, psychological symptoms, memory, learning and other factors in human life have been conducted for
the last fifty years. Scientists now understand the stages of sleep and they pretty much understand how each stage of sleep affects at least part of human functioning. For instance,
they know that sleep deprivation negatively affects memory, which negatively affects learning. Historically, there has been a popular belief that teenagers do not need as much sleep as their
younger siblings. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Teenagers have also been accused of being lazy because they become tired and sleepy during the day, they even fall asleep
in classes and/or during tests. This is also a falsehood and a myth. Teenagers, in reality, need more sleep than their younger siblings. It has to do with their
biological clock, the circadian rhythm that dictates to every living organism when sleep must happen. Given the research findings, particularly studies conducted in Rhode Island and Minnesota, some high
schools have changed the start time an hour later. These schools have found significant changes in their students. Numerous benefits of having a later start time for high school students
