variety of sleep disorders that include insomnia, hypersomnia, circadian rhythm-based sleep disorder, sleep apnea, narcolepsy, myoclonus and restless leg syndrome (Simpson, 1996). Many are familiar with insomnia either because they
know someone who has it, they have it themselves or they have read about it. Insomnia is typically described as an inability to sleep even though the body needs rest.
Dr. Henry Olders, an expert on sleep disorders, explains that there is a great deal of misconceptions about the concept of insomnia (Engel, 2000). He says that insomnia is
merely a symptom, and one that is typically due to some other underlying factor (2000).He says that many people really suffer from what doctors refer to as a delayed
sleep phase syndrome, and that is characterized by a great deal of difficulty falling asleep at night (2000). This is generally accompanied by difficulty waking and getting out of bed
in the morning, something that often disappears as people age (2000). He also notes that the cause is rather illusive but experts do have an opinion as to what is
most likely the cause of this inability to fall asleep (2000). One thing is that changes in sleeping can affect ones ability to sleep (2000). For example, someone gets up
very early to go fishing one morning, or stays up late on a Saturday night, and come Monday morning their body clock is off. Other triggers emanate from the
use of caffeine or other stimulants (2000). Sedatives or depressives, including alcohol, can affect sleep as can disorders such as depression (2000). Stress, anxiety, worry or excess napping can
