After all, how can the college coeds drink all night and go to school the next day without losing at least a little shuteye? Again, that is a stereotype and the truth is really far from that in terms of what college life is really like. Yes, there are a lot of parties, but there is a lot of studying going on as well. Students in todays day and age find they are doing internships, taking advantage of work-study programs, and driving home occasionally for family events. They have to write papers, do group projects, and study for midterms and finals. They do have social lives, but their work and school lives are very busy too, and in part, the lack of free time plays a role in the lack of sleep. Many first year college students find that they are running on no sleep, or at least very little sleep, a good deal of the time (Staley, 2008). They are also notorious for sleeping very late on occasion, but the idea that this makes up for the lack of sleep during the rest of the week is a misnomer. On balance, college students do not get the sleep they need for optimal health. Researchers claim that college students need at least eight hours of sleep each night, and some say that they can use as much as ten (Staley, 2008). It should be noted that over the years, the number of hours that a college student sleeps has been declining (Staley, 2008). This is not just due to "partying."
