title indicates, the people becomes slaves of an order called the Mastery. The Mastery is a world that is attached to the use of slavery. Unlike other societies that have
dabbled in slave labor, the Mastery seems to be completely reliant on the use slaves. In the first book, Krestel and others would fight against Morah, but in this book,
Krestel is on her own fighting for a cause. She manages to elude those who might capture her and make her a slave. In her quest to help those who
have been captured, including her brother Bowman to whom she is connected telepathically, the story unfolds. The setting is obviously one equated with fantasy. The author sets up a
unique world where one has to keep track of civilizations. There is a significant transition from the first to the second book and it is helpful for the reader to
have been acquainted with the beginning of this story. Either way, the reader is quickly drawn into a world that is very different than the one he or she lives
in. Clearly, this is a book that is tied to the ability to transition the reader from the ordinary to the unusual. The character development is somewhat light as
there is little attachment to many of them with the exception of Krestel and perhaps Bowman. Krestel is the star of this volume. One thing that the writer does is
to emphasize the importance of family. The fact that this nuclear family exists in this topsy turvy world to some extent upholds this as a central value. The fact that
the twins are able to communicate with one another without speaking is not an unusual twist in a fantasy novel, but it may be said that twins communicating in this
