and they focus on apologizing for the past, or they focus on trying to forget the past involving the enslavement of the African American people. However, the truth is it
happened and there is no turning back, nor is there any way to truly make amends to those people who suffered in slavery. What we have, however, is an incredibly
rich history as it involves blacks and whites during the times of slavery. If we put aside the horrors of slavery, and look at the families, both white and
black, during the times of slavery we find rich heritages. And, in many cases, without the white slave holders there would be no genealogy record for African Americans to follow,
many of them actually possessing white blood, and the whites possessing black blood. In this respect we see the rich heritage of people, many slave families living in harmony to
some extent, despite the harsh reality of slavery. In Edward Balls book "Slaves in the Family" one man sets out to uncover some of the history of his slaveholding
family, uncovering many intriguing truths that are perhaps reflective of an aspect of slavery that is not often examined or discussed. The following paper examines Balls work in relationship to
his own discoveries, those that relate to his desire to aid the African American families that were so directly linked to his own. Slaves in the Family From
the beginning of Balls work we get the impression that Edward has always been somewhat intrigued and curious about the familys history. Slaves were never really discussed, though Edward knew
