While it was considered common and all but expected in the early history of the United States, it was also something that anyone with any sense of morality or integrity
understood as wrong, especially in a civilized world. The following apper examines the negative nature of slavery in American history. Slavery was a Bad Institution Practiced in the
Civilized World The institution of slavery is perhaps bad enough, in and of itself, in relationship to a so-called civilized society. It entails the ownership of people as though they
were objects, material items, and it also, in American history, entailed the abuse and oppression of a culture of people. The Africans were stolen from their families in Africa and
then transported and sold, coming into the United States and then sold at auctions to the highest bidder, as though they were cattle. And, in all honesty they were likely
treated less kindly than were cattle or horses during the time. Slaves were possessions, not people, and simply believing that and acting as if that were truth is one of
the most horrific truths about slavery. Slaves were important, and many can well argue that without slaves the United States would not be what it is today in terms
of one of the most powerful nations in the world. It was only through slavery that the United States was able to grow huge crops in the South and become
a very powerful and wealthy nation. But, this clearly did not make the practice of slavery a good thing, or perhaps even a necessary thing. Many people, black and white
alike, were, in the colonial days, brought to the new nation as indentured servants wherein they agreed to work for someone, almost as a slave, for so many years and
