Slavery was a component of world history practically since the beginning of mankinds reign on earth. The issues
surrounding slavery all came to a head, however, in the fledgling United States. There were, of course, those that vehemently opposed slavery. There were also those that presented
significant arguments for its validity. The intent of this paper is to explore two major facets of those arguments. Those are 1. paternalism, and 2. the
coincidence of national and self interest which was at play in perpetuating the institution. Fitzhugh (1857) was just one proponent of slavery that
pointed to history itself as justification. The concepts of liberty and justice, Fitzhugh argued were the new concepts while the concept of slavery could be traced all the way
back to ancient Rome and beyond. There were, of course, many learned men and women of color who loudly and quite eloquently denounced the institution of slavery. In
a September 1830 address delivered at a meeting of AME church delegates representing eight individual states, for example, Richard Allen urged that people of color band together and "devise and
pursue all legal means for the speedy elevation of ourselves and brethren to the scale and standing of men". One option that was being considered was relocating to Africa.
