is today. When most people envision, or think about, slavery they often just think about what slavery was for the African American. But, it was clearly an institution that affected all people in many different ways. With that in mind the following paper examines how the institution of slavery affected the South prior to the Civil War. Slavery and the South As mentioned, the institution of slavery was a very powerful institution that ultimately helped create a powerful nation. Without slavery it is likely that the United States would have become a very different nation. But, through slavery the South, most especially, was able to stand strong from an economic perspective. Clearly those in the North also benefited from all the agricultural success of the South. One author illustrateshow, "Compared to the Northeast and Midwest, with their emphasis on towns and urban developments, the South was a land of farms and plantations" (Burton, 1985; 28). In fact, part of the entire conflict in the Civil War, and prior to the Civil War, involved the fact that the South wished to secede from the North, becoming its own nation with the understanding that they held a great deal of economic power due to agriculture and of course slavery. One author notes, in relationship to their essentially power due to slavery, "Slavery formed the backbone of the South economically...it became just as much the political and social basis of Southern identity as well" (Smith, 2008). In light of such facts one can clearly see that the South likely had its own particular type of reasoning and mentality when it came to their way of life, a way of life that clearly included slaves.
