it involves the evolution of women. The following paper argues that slavery had both positive and negative impacts on African American women during the 19th century. Positive and
Negative Impacts of Slavery on African American Women In first looking at the issue of slavery and the African woman in terms of positive and negative impacts it is important
that one understand where the women came from. In some cases it may well be that the women came from matriarchal societies, but for the most part they were often
a part of a patriarchal system in Africa wherein they had little control (Historical Interconnections between Gender, Class and Race). And, one must also understand that slavery was a very
common reality in Africa long before the white Europeans came and took advantage of the Africans. In light of this one could well begin the argument for positives and negatives
in slavery for African women by understanding that they may not have been incredibly free to begin with in their own culture. And, while the institution of slavery in the
United States that awaited many of them was certainly devastating and destructive, it may well have offered some more opportunities in the long run thus contributing to a positive impact
in the end. In the institution of slavery in the United States women were generally treated very differently than men in relationship to those who were enslaved. Men were
beaten and worked and that was essentially the end of their role for the white masters. Women, although oppressed by black males and white females and males, had more opportunities
