and prejudice. This story is full of the obvious hate Melville had for slavery and tries to make the obvious connection between Delanos prejudice and the fact that he
is oblivious to the blacks power even when he is among them. It isnt until he is almost literally hit over the head with the facts that he realizes
the situation he is in. The story of Benito Cereno is interesting in that much of this work by Herman Melville is
revealed in the form of a flashback. In other words, much of the story is presented from the perspective of Captain Delano and since he often is unaware of
certain happenings, then we too are often left somewhat unaware until the end of the book. But, it is interesting to note that the very reason he is unaware
of what is happening is because of his beliefs in regards to blacks. It never occurs to him that they would be capable of a mutiny. Captain Delano is
an American Sea Captain. He is a good man with simple values and a caring, compassionate and trusting nature. It is this trusting nature that gets him into
trouble from the start. Upon seeing another ship which he believes is in trouble, he decides he must go and offer his help. Instead of questioning their motives
as another captain may have done - especially given their location in the middle of nowhere and attempted slave revolts being relatively common at that time, his good, trusting persona
simply accepts what he sees as truth and no suspicion is warranted in his mind. Despite this goodness, he also believes that blacks are lesser beings than whites.
