On February 6, 1837 John C. Calhoun published an article titled "Slavery a Positive Good". The title of the article alone encapsulates Calhouns views
of what is considered one of the most horrendous aspects of American history. Slavery is, in fact, to be credited with the earliest chapters of the construction of this
country. Without it we doubtlessly wouldnt have experienced the rapid development and prosperity that we enjoyed in our earliest history both as a colony of England and, once
we declared our independence, as a young nation. Despite those facts, the merits of slavery werent embraced unequivocally by all Americans. Indeed, many considered slavery a barbaric institution
and one that should be abolished at the earliest opportunity. Just as those that opposed slavery were willing to fight to end it, those that supported were willing to
fight to defend it. John C. Calhoun was firmly planted in that latter camp. Calhoun was an avid defender of slavery and
believed that any attempt to abolish it should not even be acknowledged by Congress. He contended that even to review the abolitionists petitions was to give them more consideration
than was warranted. Even more concerning, from Calhouns perspective, was that a Congressional concession to review the petitions would ultimately result in them being referred to committee. Calhoun
