atrocities one people are willing to inflict on another in the name of self profit. Slavery in the Americas, of course, consisted of people of all colors and cultures.
It was not just the black African that suffered from this horrible wrong. Never-the-less, it was the black Africans that constituted the greatest percentage of slaves. Consequently,
much thought has been given as to what they thought and felt during their enslavement. What inspired them to endure? What inspired them to resist? Many answers
have been postulated to those questions. Most revolve around the concept of cosmology or the slaves religions understanding of the world and his or her place in it.
Indeed, historians have argued that a slaves cosmology or religious understanding of the world was an important source of their resistance to slavery. A counter argument, however, is that
religion has little to do with a persons desire for freedom. Indeed, even wild animals thirst for freedom when they find themselves in captivity and often take drastic actions
to acquire that freedom. The contention presented above is not to say that the slaves of early American history did not have a
complex culture, a culture that encompassed a deep religiosity. Indeed, Nat Turner, leader of one of the most infamous slave rebellions in history was a deeply religious man.
His religion, however, was Christianity not a religion that hailed from his African background. While obvious elements of the two mixed in slave culture, the point is that the
influence of white culture was a powerful element in slave culture. This resulted in a very complex culture that is not totally understood by anyone.
