excessive use of power can be a corrupting influence on those who wield it. Discussion What Douglass was saying, in essence, was the old adage, "Power corrupts and absolute power
corrupts absolutely." When we keep in mind that masters had absolute power over their slaves, the literal power of life and death, its easy to understand how this can apply
to them: "Unchecked power is always dangerous, and it is not surprising that it was sometimes misused" (Faragher et al, 2000, p. 317). The potential for the abuse of power
is present in any relationship where one party is subservient to another, whether that relationship is based on belief (religion); economy (slavery); or intimacy (marriage). In the first example,
a priest, minister or rabbi, in the eyes of believers, is a person of immense power because of his special relationship with God. He is also to be obeyed because
his position puts him in the position of an "intercessor"-he is between the believer and God, and can interpret Gods word or relay his commandments. When the believers immortal soul
is at stake, hes very unlikely to disobey anything the other says or question anything he does. Unfortunately, the believer may sometimes transfer his or her worshipful feelings about
God onto the person of the intercessor, almost literally coming to worship him. It takes a very strong individual to resist this unconscious flattery; if he is unable to do
so, he may find himself believing it to be justified. He may start to feel that he deserves this misplaced "hero worship," and this will call his entire ministry into
