Slavery is one of the more abhorrent reflections of world societies. Contrary to common belief, the institution was not limited to something that
occurred in just one geographic area in just one time period. Indeed, slavery can be traced back to mankinds earliest history. Often it was one culture or race
exploiting another. Equally as often, however, slavery involved a people selling their own people into slavery. The testament of Olaudah
Equiano, a black 18th century slave from the Igbo-speaking region of Nigeria who ultimately made a name for himself in the abolitionist movement of European society, details this occurrence.
Black Africans, in particular, it seems were a target of slavers. Often, however, the institution of slavery existed within specific African culture itself. Indeed, the very cultures that
were sometimes exploited as slaves were often guilty of exploiting either their own people or people of other villages that had been taken as prisoners of war. Indeed, Equiano
emphasizes that the people his villagers most often sold into slavery were either prisoners of war from another village or people within his own village that had been convicted of
what Equino described as particular horrendous crimes like rape or murder. Those people, non-the-less, were members of the very culture that sold them.
