think of the South were based on the degrading system of slavery. This paper describes what life was like for slaves in the South before the Civil War, and how
well they were prepared to cope with freedom. Discussion Life for slaves in the South before the Civil War was absolute misery. They worked from before sunup to after sundown,
and were classified as property and treated as such (Blassingame 326). The crop rotation was such that they had no respite at all: cotton was planted around the end of
March and picked from August to Christmas; after that was done, corn was harvested (Blassingame 327). The slaves were property, not people, completely at their masters mercy, and subject to
his whims and fancies, including punishments. Since slaves were considered inferior to all whites, they could be disciplined even by non-slave owners (Blassingame 331). The despicably cruel slave owner was
quite real, though more the exception than the rule. Slaves unlucky enough to be on a plantation with such an owner might suffer unspeakable torture: a slave named Moses Roper
who was "an incorrigible runaway, regularly received 100 to 200 lashes from his owner" (Blassingame 331). His master once "poured tar on his head and sit it afire"; on another
occasion, "his master had the nails of his fingers and toes beaten off" (Blassingame 331). A slave who accidentally bumped a white man later had his arm and shoulder blades
broken (Blassingame 331). On plantations where this type of cruelty occurred, "horrendous sounds constantly reverberated ... nauseated black men vomited while strung up over slowly burning tobacco leaves, vicious dogs
tore black flesh, black men moaned ... as they were bent over barrels ... while paddles with holes in them broke blisters on their rumps. Frequently blacks called Gods name
