themes that are very relevant to mankind. The following paper presents a summary of Vonneguts novel while also discussing conflict, theme, setting, and characterization. Slaughterhouse Five This novel is
about one main character, Billy Pilgrim. Billy is born in New York in the year 1922 and his life is filled with incredible adventures due to his time travel. Because
Billy is involved in traveling in time, the novel is not set up in any chronological order as it jumps back and forth. But, for the sake of simplicity this
summary will put things in chronological order for the most part. Billy is a weak boy and also very awkward. As a young man he is drafted into the war
just before the Battle of the Bulge. He is captured and he and other POWs are sent to a camp where many Russian prisoners are dying and British officers seem
to be treated well. They are then sent to Dresden, Germany, which is soon bombed till almost nothing is left. The POWs hide out waiting for something to happen, waiting
to be rescued. They exist in the city, clearing it out, until the Russians come and they are essentially free. Back in the United States Billy goes back to school
to become an optometrist. He falls in love with the daughter of the schools owner, Valencia. However, he soon has a break down because of his visions and his time
traveling experiences. In the mental institute he is introduced into the world of science fiction by a man named Kilgore Trout, who is another mental patient. In many ways this
helps him ground himself and thus he improves so that he is release. He marries Valencia and with the help of her father becomes successful and somewhat wealthy. Billy and
