it. Brief History Skywriting "originated in England around World War I [when] Maj. John C. Savage of the Royal Air Force used smoke from airplanes to send military signals over
long distances" (Hartill, 2000, p. 22). The first commercial use of skywriting was also in England, when "Capt. Cyril Turner wrote Daily Mail over England in May of 1922" (Hartill,
2000, p. 22). It came to America the same year, when Capt. Turner wrote "Hello USA" above New York that October (Hartill, 2000, p. 22). The "heyday" of skywriting was
during the 1930s, 1940s and early 1950s, when "Pepsi Cola used skywriting as its main way of advertising" (Hartill, 2000, p. 22). Skywriting declined when television became popular; with TV
"advertisers could target their messages at specific audiences" (Hartill, 2000, p. 22). At the time Hartill wrote his article, there were only about a half-dozen skywriters in the country (Hartill,
2000, p. 22). However, another source says that "[S]kywriting, a common branding tool during the dot-com heyday, is thriving once again" (Applebaum, 2004, p. 32). However, it is more likely
now to be skytyping rather than skywriting. How They Do It Skywriters all have their own individual methods for making their designs. One pilot, Wayne Mansfield, comes from "a family
of pilots" (Hartill, 2000, p. 22). Mansfield "soloed at 13, and sky-wrote his first word ("fly") seven years later. Hes constantly on the move, towing large banners during the day
and "starboards" (illuminated signs) at night with his small plane. Banners are his main business. Skywriting is a small part of it" (Hartill, 2000, p. 22). Mansfield reminds us
