in dangerous areas, officers are in fact treated with respect by ordinary citizens. At the same time, in many parts of the nation where crime is not a problem, the
police officer is not given much respect. The sight of the uniform is a bit disturbing to those who like to push the mileage a bit or who do not
want to be confronted for a minor indiscretion like littering or loitering. Although many minor laws on the books are not even enforced, there is sometimes a barrier when communicating
with a uniformed individual. People do not want their freedoms violated and there have been many times when an officer has abused his authority. Also, it appears that the personality
of the police officer is sometimes harsh. Is this an illusion or do all police officers have similar personalities? Skolnick (1966) theorized that there are three factors that influence
the personality of the police officer and they are danger, authority and efficiency. Within that model, the author examines the policeman throughout the nation and finds that there are similarities
in respect to personality (1966). What occurs is that one can see specific cognitive tendencies amongst officers and so it is easy to come up with a working personality to
describe the police officer (1966). In other words, there are certain attributes that one can provide to describe police conduct and so forth. One point made by Skolnick is
that the officer sees himself as different from other citizens. In very many ways, he is. If a police officer is off duty, that does not preclude him from making
arrests. He or she is bound by an agreement of sorts. The individual is a police officer 24-7 and conduct is supposed to be exemplary. One can imagine that
