Skocpol appears to be answering the question why social revolutions have occurred in some countries but not in others. She does this by giving a comparative historical analysis of
the causes and outcomes in the countries of France, Russia, and China. -What is the authors main argument? The authors main argument
appears to be that the major modes of explaining social revolution should be rejected. This can be validated by an examination of her critical review of Marxs theory, aggregate-psychological
theories, political conflict theory, and system/value consensus theories. Skocpol appears to conclude that there is more than one cause of social revolution.
She wrote, "I have argued that (1) state organizations susceptible to administrative and military collapse when subjected to intensified pressures from more developed countries from abroad and (2) agrarian sociopolitical
structures that facilitated widespread peasant revolts against landlords were, taken together the sufficient distinctive causes of social-revolutionary situations commencing in France, 1789, Russia, 1917, and China 1911" (Skocpol, 1979, 154).
She appears to argue that the social revolutions in France, Russia, and China have been enormous upheavals that have assisted in shaping the
