Information On This Paper Please Human skin serves a vast array of functions besides its obvious containment of the bodys internal components. In part it protects
the body from infection and dehydration, while also being fundamentally significant in the regulation of body temperature by fluid secretion from sweat glands and the adjustment of blood flow through
superficial capillaries. In addition, it is the bodys largest and most visible organ of elimination, and innumerable toxins are excreted through the skins pores before they can become deleterious
to the human organism (Science, 2001). Therefore, when disorders occur in this multi-tasking organ it is easy to understand how their effects can often be widespread and profound.
This essay examines a number of skin disorders and issues relevant to their causation, symptomolgy, manifestation, and the like. Probably one of the most common skin disorders - and one
that few adolescents ever have the pleasure of escaping -- is acne. Typically, this condition is caused by an increase in sebum production within hair follicles, causing dead cells
and keratin fragments to adhere to the sebum and block the follicle opening. Bacteria trapped with free fatty acids within the follicle breed rapidly and produce infection that in
turn forms the visible skin eruption. Often the increase in sebum production is the result of hormonal changes, (dihydrotestosterone -- which stimulates the production of sebum) in the growing
