concentration 68.3% of the global market is controlled by the top five manufacturers. In 1979 are only about a dozen suppliers of portable power tools within the United States, which indicates a high level of concentration in the United States. The position of an oligopoly supported by the position of Black & Decker which has between 40% to 43% of the US market for portable electric power tools, making it the dominant supplier. An oligopoly can take two forms; a cooperative oligopoly or a competitive oligopoly. In a cooperative oligopoly there is likely to be a high level of collaboration, either express or tacit, which increases the level of control over market, and may act as a deterrent to new entrants. A good example of a cooperative oligopoly is that of OPEC, one of the few legal cartels (Mintzberg et al, 2003). Cooperation, either tacit or express, can result in practices such as price-fixing and constraints on the way products are developed, marketed or distributed. The second type of oligopoly is that of a competitive oligopoly. This is where the companies are fiercely competing with each other and there is no agreement (Mintzberg et al, 2003). In the portable power tool industry there appears to be a high level of competition between the different firms. This means that Corporation is unlikely and companies will seek to compete in order to gain market share. The structure of the industry becomes more competitive when looking at the retail outlets. There are a large number of independent retail outlets as well as the presence of home centres and chain stores or selling portable electric tools.
