world? If we can be certain of anything, what is it and how? In this essay, the students personal opinions are set out first, followed by an assessment of
the theories of Hume and Peirce respectively: the conclusion considers which of these two philosophical approaches most closely aligns with the students own viewpoint. Personal opinion.
I have observed that on the whole, human beings are never content with their current level of knowledge: they are always questioning, and seeking to
know more. The construction of knowledge is dependent on finding new methods and techniques of understanding the world around us, so that we can add new information to the existing
body of knowledge: this new information then becomes the foundation for the next stage of learning. So, we find both artists and scientists searching for new tools, new methodologies, new
means of expression, so that the quest for knowledge can be advanced. My own opinion is that we can never actually reach the
end of this quest: we cannot even predict the outcome of our own development. If we consider each peoples life as a film, then we are each the scriptwriter and
director of our own narrative, but we can never say for certain how the story will end. Although we make plans, and try to foresee what our future circumstances might
be, we can never know all of the factors which contribute to shaping our destiny, and consequently the unexpected can always occur. Human beings are always debating and questioning what
is already known, as well as looking for ways in which we can find out more: our existing knowledge never satisfies us. From the
