Six Sigma and Lean Manufacturing. If we look at these they may be seen to have many of the same goals. The
Six Sigma system is a tool that has the aim of giving information that can be used to develop and monitor systems with the goal of making those system near
perfect. Many companies make use of this tool including General Electric and Motorola. The tool definition can be seen as derived form its name. The term sigma is a term
use in statistics that measures how much it is that any process is seen to deviate from perfection (General Electric, 2005). This
is used to mean that with the tool statistics are used in the measurement of how many defeats are present in a system or process (General Electric, 2005). Once it
is known how many defect there are they can be sought out and the causes of the defeats may be identified and then attempts made to eliminate them to bring
he process as close to perfect as possible (Breyfogle et al, 2001). It is a systematic way of identifying defects and then measuring the effectiveness of any remedial work (General
Electric, 2005). Six Sigma has six main concepts that the tool revolves around and focuses on as the key areas of
development. These are; * Critical to Quality; These are the areas that are seen as critical not by the company, but by the customer (General Electric, 2005). * Defects;
