Six Sigma have been around a long time (PCAI, 2006a). It is true that Six Sigma uses many conventional methods but it uses these methods in a different way (PCAI, 2006a). It is also true that Six Sigma and TQM have the same and similar emphases (Pyzdek, 2001). Both TQM and Six Sigma emphasize the importance of top-down leadership and support and both stress that "continuous improvement of quality is critical to long-term business success" (Pyzdek, 2001). Both are long-term processes (Pyzdek, 2001; PCAI, 2006a). A critical difference between the two approaches is management guidance (Pyzdek, 2001). Total Quality Management provides only broad and very abstract guidelines for managers to follow while Six Sigma provides more discrete guidelines for the manager (Pyzdek, 2001). PCAI (2006b) wrote "Six Sigma was developed by CEOs to create an infrastructure of change agents throughout the organization." Having all employees, in effect, take on the role of change agent changes the culture dramatically and leads to continuous improvement. Kotelnikov (2005) explained: "It [Six Sigma] is first and foremost a business process that enables companies to increase profits dramatically by streamlining operations, improving quality, and eliminating defects or mistakes in everything a company does." As mentioned, it is a long-term process but it provides immediate improvement in quality management as well as in the companys profit margin (Kotelnikov, 2005). While TQM and other quality improvement approaches focus on two or three years in the future, Six Sigma focus on twelve-month increments of time (Kotelnikov, 2005).
