These issues are of concern to the public because they affect numbers of people, though some are more urgent than others. However, they are all of importance. They are: smoking near hospitals; providing parking for the uninsured or low income patients; internet porn sites and the impact of pornography on relationships; obesity; the stress caused by the current financial crisis; and the impact of runoff and environmental pollutants on clean water. The three less important issues are the smoking around hospitals, parking, and clean water. The ones to be explored in depth are internet porn, obesity, and the stress caused by the current financial crisis. Its misleading to categorize some of the issues as more important than others, because they are all of concern. However, the length of the paper precludes discussing all of them in depth. That does not mean, though, that further research/work on them should be abandoned. Smoking around hospitals is a public health issue for several reasons. The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center banned smoking on all its properties, including its hospital, in 2007, and has noticed a vast improvement: "Its a better atmosphere for everybody" (Smoke-free one year later, 2008). Non-smokers dont have to deal with making their way through a crowd of smokers as they enter or leave the building (Smoke-free one year later, 2008). Smoking is a recognized cause of lung cancer, and so to have people smoking in or around hospitals sends a very mixed message to visitors. A hospital is a place of healing, and if there are people outside indulging in an activity known to be harmful, it sends a very poor message (Smoke-free one year later, 2008).
