Essay / Research Paper Abstract
This 5 page paper briefly discusses the meaning of the term "situational analysis" and how it assists pilots in making crucial flight decisions. be prepared for any eventuality or crisis and therefore prepared to problem solve and compensate. According to OHare (1997), the term "situational analysis" serves as a convenient label
for various cognitive processes that must be involved in human interaction with complex, dynamic environments. As it applies to pilots, Besco (1994) has described situational analysis as part of
the most successful mix of characteristics that differentiate good from mediocre pilots. Such characteristics include enhanced "situational awareness" allowing anticipation of errors and corrective courses of action, emotional stability, and
positive interactions with other crew members. As Roscoe (1974) put it, "Skill in the rapid time-sharing of attention among . . . competing demands is a characteristic that distinguishes the
effective aircraft commander from the casualty statistic" (p. 14). Generally, individuals with the highest levels of situational analysis skills possess greater general intelligence or above-average abilities on a range
of specific individual attributes such as spatial ability, pattern recognition skills, and working memory. Endsley (1995) suggested that individual differences in situational analysis could also arise from underlying individual differences
in even greater number of specific abilities. Endsley (1995) would add cognitive complexity, mental simulation, and attention sharing to the preceding attributes as skills serving important roles in overall
situational analysis. A wide range of tests and batteries have also been developed by both military and commercial experts to measure these abilities. Subsequent test results are most often
used for the purpose of pilot selection, improved follow-up training, and new technology development or enhancement. Strong situational analysis skills allow well-trained and experienced pilots to cope with every situation
by mentally preparing alternative and effective courses of action. Pilots are generally taught that they should learn to expect the worst, and then avoid an emotional reaction to a
